<div style="margin-left: 10px">Caritas Hong Kong is the social service arm of the Roman Catholic Church in Hong Kong. It was founded by the local Catholic Diocese to address the social hardships and inequities in Hong Kong resulting from World War II and subsequent immigration from the mainland. It has since become a major provider of social services in Hong Kong – including health, education, different kinds of social work services and hospitality service – with its funding now derived mainly from the Hong Kong government. Since 1980, it has also supported numerous relief, development and social welfare projects in mainland China. Funding for these services comes mainly from local and overseas donors.</div>

<div style="margin-left: 10px">As well as disaster relief efforts, the mainland China programme has supported income generation projects in rural areas, the equipping of rural clinics, the renovation and/or building of schools and kindergartens, training for kindergarten teachers, and the provision of living allowances for elderly people living alone. These projects are carried out by making grants, usually to local government partners, but also sometimes to local NGOs and Catholic organizations such as the Catholic Social Service Centre of Xi’an Diocese (天主教西安教区社会服务办公室).</div>

<div style="margin-left: 10px">In other kinds of project, Caritas makes use of its Hong Kong social welfare expertise to transfer skills to mainland partners. This has included, for example, training of nursing home staff, rehabilitation staff and the parents of autistic children, workshops and training seminars for adult education teachers and administrators, and study tours to Hong Kong for mainland health workers and rehabilitation professionals. Another recent area of work has been training in marriage guidance counselling and family life education. </div>

The Badi Foundation facilitates the establishment of community-based organizations and program groups, partnering with them to design and implement education and training programs, and building their capacity to collaborate with government to promote balanced development. <div style="margin-left: 10px">The Badi Foundation was established in Macau in 1990, where it is registered as a non-profit charitable organization. The foundation established a representative office in Beijing, registered under the State Administration for Industry and Commerce of the People’s Republic of China in1997. Under the guidance of the State Administration of Foreign Experts Affairs, the Badi Foundation has worked with a wide variety of government agencies, NGOs and academic institutions in China, including national, provincial and local Poverty Alleviation Offices, provincial and local Women’s Federations, and the China Association for NGO Cooperation. The foundation has also collaborated with international organizations such as the United Nations Development Programme, United Nations World Food Programme, and UNICEF in our efforts in China. In January 2011 the Badi Foundation and China Charity Federation entered into a 10 year collaboration agreement establishing the “China Charity Federation Badi Community Development Fund” to support non-profit organizations and projects in China that build the capacity of individuals and institutions in rural areas to contribute to the sustainable development of their communities.</div>

The Badi Foundation is also striving to learn how institutions of formal education can contribute to balanced development. To this end, the School of the Nations, the foundation&#8217;s internationally-oriented school in Macau, promotes the intellectual, moral and physical development of its students in an integrated manner, with the goal of equipping them with the capabilities needed to make a meaningful and enduring contribution to society. </div>

The aim of the Junior Youth Empowerment Program is to release the potential of youth between the ages of 12 and 15 to contribute to the development of their communities through enhancing their powers of expression in the English language and developing their moral capacities, including their ability to design and implement projects to serve their communities. The Badi Foundation also implements the Junior Youth Empowerment Program at the School of the Nations and in collaboration with a number of local schools in Macau. The Environmental Action Program builds capacity in rural women to participate in the development of their communities through understanding and applying scientific concepts of sustainable development, while also building confidence and transforming mindsets. The Badi Foundation assists the community-based organizations and program groups to implement these programs, while also building their institutional capacity through the foundation’s Institutional Capacity Building Program. <div style="margin-left: 10px">Asia Catalyst provides tailored coaching in organizational management, community research and advocacy to grassroots groups working on the right to health. We focus especially on groups from marginalized communities, such as sex workers, drug users, LGBTQ people, and people living with HIV/AIDS. Much of the work has focused on grassroots groups in the Peoples Republic of China. We have also worked with groups in South Korea, Thailand, and Myanmar (Burma).</div>
<div style="margin-left: 10px">&nbsp;</div>
<div style="margin-left: 10px">Asia Catalyst’s approach uses tools we have honed in the field with input from our partners. We help each group to develop simple and clear strategic plans, project timelines, budgets, and volunteer management systems that fit their unique context. On this foundation we may also assist groups to develop community research and advocacy projects to build their capacity to advocate for their issues, such as discrimination, criminalization and access to health services. We train groups to engage effectively with local officials, international donors, and the UN, and to participate in international meetings. </div>

<div style="margin-left: 10px">Currently Asia Catalyst provides capacity-building in China through the NGO Leadership Cohort, a one year training course that brings together representatives from ten organizations over the course of four workshops, as well as individualized one-on-one coaching of up to six months which focuses on one specific skill set.</div>
<div style="margin-left: 10px">&nbsp;</div>
<div style="margin-left: 10px">Based on our training experience, we develop curriculum materials which fit the needs and demands of our local partners. The NONPROFIT SURVIVAL GUIDE is a handbook for grassroots nonprofits that provides clear and user-friendly tips and templates to use in strategic planning, volunteer management, and basic budgeting skills. The series KNOW IT, PROVE IT, CHANGE IT! A RIGHTS CURRICULUM FOR GRASSROOTS GROUPS is created to help grassroots organizations in communities affected by HIV/AIDS understand their basic rights, document their local situation, and design advocacy campaigns. This is a joint project with Thai AIDS Treatment Action Group (TTAG) and Dongjen Center for Human Rights Education and Action</div>

<div style="margin-left: 10px">Asia Catalyst conducts our own research and publishes reports, which draw on individual testimony to document legal rights issues that affect our partners. Our most recent report is China&#8217;s Blood Disaster: The Way Forward. This joint publication with the Korekata AIDS Law Center documents the need for a national mechanism in China to compensate tens of thousands of victims of the HIV/AIDS tainted blood disaster since victims have been unable to get fair compensation on their own. </div>
