BRRC Raptor Rehabilitator

Reports to:BRRC Manager and Senior Rehabilitator

Location:IFAW Beijing Raptor Rescue Center, in Beijing Normal University



The raptor rehabilitator is on the front line in interacting with the public, media and government officials regarding raptor conservation, rehabilitation and animal welfare of wild animals and to practice the high animal welfare and help lead the profession as a model in China and internationally.

Role and Responsibilities

Animal Care/ Rehabilitation

Diet preparation;

Cage and facility cleaning and maintenance;

Raptor handling and care;

Treat raptors for illnesses and injuries;

Locate appropriate release sites and participate in releases;

Document all relevant health, welfare and research data;

Perform laboratory diagnostics;

Collect relevant research and apply to raptor rehabilitation;

Support and lead educational programs and media events to spread animal welfare concept and wildlife protection knowledge;

Record and analyze behavioural data for welfare monitoring;

Perform necropsies and collect biological samples;

Master the skill of euthanasia and perform when necessary;

Read reference and papers on animal welfare, wildlife diseases and rehabilitation;

Assimilate a working knowledge of animal welfare issues;

Develop and implement behavioural enrichment.

Operations/ Management

Receive raptor rescue and collection requests in a professional, gracious and informative manner;

Respond to raptor rescue and collect requests;

Communicate effectively with superiors, colleagues and partners;

Maintain facilities for safe routine operations;

Supervise the management of interns, student researchers and volunteers.

Responsible for the visiting group;

Raise public awareness and motivation for wildlife protection through education events;

Convey and practice health and safety rules for the center;

Support fundraising events of Headquarters;

Provide stories of rescue and rehabilitation for program’s on-line promotion;

Support legislative work on animal welfare and wildlife rescue;

Maintain record keeping system.

Qualifications and Education Requirements

Fluent in Mandarin and English would be an advantage;

Have driver’s license and able to get an international drivers permit or Beijing driver license;

Have a good driving record and a minimum of 2 years driving experience;

Be able to lift and/or move 40 kg;

Advanced degree in animal science, animal behavior, management or veterinary science preferred;

Have an interest in animal welfare and rehabilitation;

Must enjoy working with raptors;

Must be a good communicator;

Must be able to work in a team environment;

Must be able to learn quickly and apply new knowledge;

Must be able to work on weekends and holidays;

Proficiency in use of computers and Microsoft Office suite;

Have empathy with the cause of animal welfare and professional wildlife rescue; committed to promoting IFAW’s mission;

Have abilities to take initiatives and work independently with attention to detail;

Current first aid and basic cardiac life support certificate preferred.
