The American Friends Service Committee (AFSC) works to promote peace with social justice. Under the AFSC Business and Peace Program, we work to promote conflict sensitive approaches to business and works to strengthen constructive dialogue between peacebuilders, community leaders, NGOs, business stakeholders and government to mitigate conflict and realize just and sustainable outcomes. The project presently operates in Cambodia, China and Myanmar.
The Program Coordinator is responsible for the coordination of the program implementation in China and providing technical support to strengthen AFSC’s partnerships. This position is part of a regional team working on issues of Business and Peace in China, Cambodia and Myanmar. There are opportunities for learning and professional growth, with the Coordinator in close communication with the wider AFSC team and network of partners.
Activity Development and Logistic Support: Develop program activities and provide logistical support to activities, including: drafting program plans, organizing exchange activities; drafting and signing contracts; prepare materials required.
Research: Assist research initiatives, including the coordination of partner research initiatives, prepare research reports for internal use and/or publication and assist with project documentation.
Networking: The Program Coordinator is required to attend networking events relevant to the themes of the Business and Peace program, and to build and maintain new relationships for the organization.
Reporting and analysis: Ensure proper reporting and monitoring of program activities on a timely basis, on activity plans, updates and accomplishments. The coordinator will monitor national trends related to cross-border investments, business sustainability and conflict sensitivity with regular reports, which may include translation of documents from Chinese to English or English to Chinese as necessary.
Monitor Trends: Follow media reports, academic and policy journals, micro-blogs, and other public sources of information relevant to program themes; review reports submitted by AFSC interns and contribute / provide guidance around these reports as needed. The candidate is also required to develop briefing notes for external usage by partners.
Financial Management: The Program Coordinator will manage the budget and actual expenditures of program activities.
Qualifications and Skills
- Undergraduate degree or above in Social Sciences, Development Studies, International studies, or a related field.
- At least two years’ work experience in one of the following fields: non-governmental and non-profit sector, corporate social responsibility, business sustainability, environmental protection, community relations or comparable.
- Language proficiency in English and Chinese in speaking and professional writing.
- Strong interpersonal communications skills; ability to adapt to complex environments; strong cultural sensitivity, with experience working with individuals of different nationalities and backgrounds preferred.
- Project management, analytical and report writing skills required.
- Sensitive and with adequate knowledge of China political situation and context at large, with knowledge with the impacts of Chinese overseas investments.
- Shared commitment with AFSC values, especially with respect to diversity and inclusion. Open-mindedness and ability to work with people of different backgrounds without prejudice.
This position is a full-time position based in Beijing, China. As the Business and Peace Program is a regional program including AFSC’s offices in Myanmar and Cambodia, the coordinator will be required to travel periodically to these offices.
The initial contract will be offered for one-year, though extension is anticipated (based on funding and performance).
Competitive compensation package, including full benefits and insurance as required under Chinese law; starting pre-tax salary of 8,000-10,000 Chinese Yuan per month, depending on the candidate’s qualification and experience. All AFSC staffs also enjoy paid vacation and holidays (20 days of paid vacation annually) and support for training and professional development.
