The Natural Resources Defense Council (NRDC) is seeking a full-time Communications Consultant for our Power Sector Project to be based in NRDC’s Beijing office.


The Natural Resources Defense Council (NRDC) is an international nonprofit environmental organization with more than 1.4 million members and online supporters. Since 1970, our lawyers, scientists, and other environmental specialists have worked to protect the world’s natural resources, public health, and the environment. NRDC works in countries including the United States, China, India, Canada, Mexico, Chile, Costa Rica, and EU.


With a team of 30+ experts in Beijing, NRDC’s China Program is at the forefront of supporting China’s efforts on energy efficiency, renewable energy and environmental protection. In 2015, NRDC launched a Power Sector Roundtable (PSR) – a multi-stakeholder dialogue and engagement process – aimed at bringing a diverse group of policymakers, industry experts, enterprises, researchers and NGO representatives together, with the goal of jointly propelling China’s power sector transition in a direction that will result in deep emissions reductions, improved environmental safeguards, affordable pricing and high quality service for electricity consumers. The Consultant’s primary focus will be to support the PSR. The Consultant will also support NRDC’s general communications efforts as needed.


Position Summary:


The Consultant will be responsible for leading the communication efforts of NRDC’s power sector-related efforts, including the organization of regular power sector roundtables, ongoing tracking of industry news, and dissemination of project research and findings to external stakeholders, media and/or the public. The Consultant will help manage the PSR as a communication platform for policymakers, industry representatives, academics and NGOs. The Consultant will produce written communications such as newsletters, articles, blogs, etc. as well as oversee the design and production of reports and factsheets.


The Consultant will be based in NRDC’s Beijing office and will be an integral part of the NRDC China energy efficiency team and communications teams, reporting to the China Program Communications Director. The initial term will be one year, with possibility for renewal.


Essential Functions:


Coordinate with NRDC’s international and domestic partners to jointly host the PSRs.

Help develop and implement a comprehensive communications strategy for promoting the PSR, including the use of social media such as Wechat.

Develop communications materials for NRDC’s power sector-related work, including but not limited to website and social media content, factsheets, short summaries of PSR events, project analysis, as well as news articles and blog posts.

Engage key stakeholders, including policymakers, local governments and key sectors and industry associations to develop support for the PSR.

Build a network of media and social channels and a plan for engaging each media channel to maximize communication impact.

Work with the other members of NRDC’s China Program and US colleagues to enhance NRDC’s research and advocacy efforts and expertise on energy and environmental policy.

Support NRDC’s general communications efforts as needed.


Skills and Knowledge Requirements:


3+ years of experience in communications field, preferably related to energy or environmental policy. Past experience designing communications strategy and working closely with media.

Excellent writer, with ability to write and edit persuasively, particularly in Chinese.

Broad knowledge of clean energy and climate change policy in China.

Ability to work cooperatively with media and stakeholders, including policymakers, industry, and NGOs.

Strong knowledge and understanding of current trends in digital media/social media.

Strong interpersonal skills and a team player.

Strong organizational and planning skills and the ability to handle multiple tasks independently in a fast-paced environment.


Minimum qualifications


Graduate degree in a relevant field is strongly preferred.

Fluency in Chinese and English, with strong oral and written skills as well as bilingual translation ability.

Care for details, accuracy and high quality output.

Experience working in communications/media, and the public/non-profit sector desired.
