Communications Consultant

The Communications Consultant is responsible for providing support to UNDP’s Communication, Innovation and Partnership Team in its mandate to advance the Country Office’s objectives in communications and advocacy. Specifically, he/she will assist in the design and implementation of strategic communications and advocacy initiatives, assist in drafting and editing project/partnership proposals and external outreach materials (press releases, speeches, briefings etc.), and support the development of a comprehensive international social media strategy.

Duties and Responsibilities
Scope of Work:
· Coordinate the drafting and editing and of outgoing English communications materials, including proposals, speeches, correspondences, success stories, press releases, website write-ups, etc.
· Assist in developing and executing an overall communications plan and strategy to promote UNDP’s work in China to domestic and international audiences.
· Assist in develop an international social media strategy and coordinate with HQ and RBAP for implementation in China.
· Conduct research on behalf of the Country Office, compiling background materials, statistical data and briefing notes for meetings, senior management visits, advocacy, media question briefings and other outreach activities.
· Assist in strengthening and maintaining international media relations in order to increase the media coverage of UNDP’s work, including handling media enquiries.
· Support event management for conferences, workshops, report launch events etc.
· Enhance the effectiveness of internal communications, including, coordinating with programme teams.
· Be available to assist in ad-hoc tasks as required both within UNDP and other UN agencies in China.
Expected Outputs and Deliverables:
The Communications Consultant will be expected to contribute to the development of communications, innovation and partnership building activities that are capable of repositioning UNDP during a period of significant change in the structure and modality of the organisation’s operations. He/she will provide timely information to senior management enabling informed decisions to be made on political, economic and social developments.
· Effective support to assure the quality of CO external communications materials
· Effective implementation of the communications and publication strategies, including:
· Daily country office website content drafting and updating.
· Daily international social media updates.
· Success Stories and web articles to develop a story telling culture in UNDP.
· Op-ed drafting to highlight UNDP projects through media
· Newsletters to inform and update UNDP HQ and local staff about CO programmes.
· Media advisory, press releases and media Q&A briefings for senior management.
· Project summaries polishing and fine-tuning.
· International media database update and maintenance
· All other communications support to be provided according to event schedule etc.
· Facilitation of knowledge building and knowledge sharing.

· Bachelors or higher degree in communications, journalism, business management, marketing, advertising, international relations or a related field.
· Publication-standard English drafting and editing skills.
· Experience in developing and implementing communications strategies and campaign tactics
· Minimal 3 years of working experience in the field of media, Public-Relations and/or development communications;
· Experience with CQ5 and website management.
· Demonstrates sound judgment, diplomacy and sensitivity to confidential matters.
· Well versed with programme management and development.
· Experience with developing and managing social media.
· English as native language, Chinese an asset.
· Demonstrates commitment to UN’s mission, vision and values.
· Displays cultural, gender, religion, race, nationality and age sensitivity and adaptability.
· Good coordination and organisational skills: Ability to manage multiple projects, address fluctuating priorities and tight deadline.
· Experience and familiarity with UN/UNDP procedures an asset.

Required Skills and Experience
· Bachelors or higher degree in communications, journalism, business management, marketing, advertising, international relations or a related field.
· Minimal 3 years of working experience in the field of media, Public-Relations and/or development communications
· A native English speaker
